CBHA weather advisory: protecting your pipes during the cold snap

As the Olympia area experiences a cold snap, it's crucial for CBHA residents to take proactive measures to prevent water lines from freezing. Frozen pipes can lead to disruptions in water supply and potential costly damages. In this blog post, we'll provide valuable tips and steps to safeguard your water lines during these chilly days.
    1. Insulate Exposed Pipes: Start by identifying any exposed water pipes, especially those located in unheated areas like basements, crawl spaces, or attics. Insulate these pipes using pipe sleeves or heat tape.

    2. Keep Indoor Temperatures Consistent: Maintaining a consistent indoor temperature, especially during the night, can significantly reduce the risk of frozen pipes. Set your thermostat to a steady temperature, even when you're away, to ensure that your home's interior remains warm enough to protect water lines.

    3. Allow Faucets to Drip: Allowing faucets to drip slightly can relieve pressure in the water system, reducing the likelihood of pipes freezing. This is particularly helpful for faucets connected to pipes running along exterior walls.

    4. Seal Leaks and Cracks: Inspect your home for any leaks or cracks that allow cold air to penetrate. Seal these openings with caulk or weather stripping to prevent cold air from reaching your water pipes.

    5. Protect Outdoor Fixtures: If your property has outdoor water fixtures, such as spigots, make sure to disconnect and drain hoses and cover spigots.

    6. Keep Cabinet Doors Open: For pipes located beneath sinks, open cabinet doors to allow warm air to circulate around the pipes. This is particularly important in kitchens and bathrooms where pipes are often exposed.

    Stay safe, and stay warm!
